One remedy for a person who is bitten
by a vampire, according to many old legends throughout eastern
Europe, is to drink the ashes of the vampire once it is burned.
Another ironic twist to the legend is that a person should make bread
using the blood of the presumed vampire and consume it. This was said
to keep the vampire from being able to drink your blood. . .Talk
about a little hair of the dog.

Not all vampires rise as the sun falls. The Upior is an exception to the rule but is just as terrifying as it's brethren.

The Upior or Upier is a vampire of
Eastern Slavic folklore and may be where our word vampire comes from.
This should not be confused with the Upir, Upyr, or Upour as they
are different legends. This particular breed varies a bit from the
vampire we know and love as it sleeps most of the night and arises
between noon and midnight (not unlike most teenagers on a weekend).
This version of the vampire is known for it's amazing thirst for
blood that can never be quenched (the Upior even sleeps in blood).
It consumes it's victims blood through its sharp menacing barbed
tongue. When burying a family member that is feared will return as
one of these fierce creatures, the family would place the body facing
down and place crosses made of willow under each arm pit and under
the chest.

Vampire mythology has been with us for thousands of years and virtually every culture. Let's take a look far into our past and consider this:
Early Sumerian mythology, dating back
as far as 4,000 B.C., speaks of a vampire called the Ekimmu, or
Edimmu, that would suck the life out of susceptible people including
the young and sometimes sleeping victims. The Ekimmu were believed
to be ghosts or spirits that were not welcomed into the underworld,
usually do to an improper burial. The now vengeful spirit is forced
to roam the earth and on occasion posses those that would not observe
certain taboos. It was believed that this possession would cause
disease and all around nasty behavior.

While we are on the subject of real vampires. . .Here is a little piece of history you may find compelling:

Countess Elizabeth Bathory (1560-1614)
known as “the blood countess” is often considered to have been a
real vampire. She tortured and killed hundreds of her most beautiful
servant girls and would bath in their blood believing that it would
keep her young and beautiful. She was only imprisoned when her taste
for blood lead her from servant girls to members of prominent
families. She was said by most accounts to have been very beautiful.
Did her unusual bathing habits work? . . . You decide.

When considering the reality of vampires and questioning their existence one should first consider this:
There is a form of clinical vampirism
called Renfield's Syndrome where the sufferer feels uncontrollably
compelled to drink blood. The Syndrome afflicts mostly males. There
are three stages to the disorder:
First is autovampirism or
autohemophagia where the sufferer drinks his own blood. The second is
when the disorder compels the afflicted to drink animal blood by
eating live animals and drinking the life giving liquid. The third
and final stage is when the individual suffers from true vampirism
and begins to drink human blood, not his own. This is usually
accomplished from stealing from blood banks, hospitals and sometimes
straight from the source. . .a living human. As can be imagined,
this condidition can sometimes lead to murder or other crimes against
man.
